A Tonga cross stitch pattern from our Tiny Little Countries collection: the island groups from Tongatapu north to Vava'u, filled with the deep red of the flag and its white canton bearing the red cross. Three DMC colours, 239 stitches.

Tonga is the Pacific's last kingdom, never colonised, ruled by its own monarchs for a thousand years, and the cross on the flag is written into the constitution itself. More Tongans now live overseas than on the islands, so this little chart is Polynesian heritage at postable size, the kind of small stitch that gets framed and sent home.

Captain Cook named them the Friendly Islands after the welcome he received, and the kingdom has kept its own line of monarchs through everything since. More than 170 islands make up Tonga, scattered across an ocean the size of a continent, with the red and white flying over churches and rugby grounds from Nuku'alofa to Auckland.
