Oman is known for frankincense groves, turtle beaches, and mountain wadis, and expats often say it's the hardest Gulf posting to leave. A small stitch for years lived in Muscat, for Omani families abroad, or as a leaving gift for a colleague heading home.

Frankincense from Oman's Dhofar hills was once worth more than gold, carried by caravan to Rome and by ship to China, and the groves still stand. The flag's red comes from the old banner of the sultanate, and Muscat's harbour forts have watched over the trade for five centuries.
