A Madagascar cross stitch pattern from our Tiny Little Countries collection: the world's fourth-largest island running long and narrow down the chart, filled with the white, red, and green of the Malagasy flag. Four DMC colours, 496 stitches.
Madagascar split from every other landmass so long ago that most of what lives there exists nowhere else, lemurs included, and the island grows most of the world's vanilla. A satisfying tall, slim stitch for anyone with Malagasy roots, a naturalist streak, or a trip to the eighth continent behind or ahead of them.

Ninety percent of Madagascar's wildlife lives nowhere else on earth, from a hundred kinds of lemur to the great baobabs of the western avenues, which is why biologists call it the eighth continent. The flag's white and red come from the old Merina kingdom, and the green honours the coastal peoples who farmed and fished around it.
