Madagascar split from every other landmass so long ago that most of what lives there exists nowhere else, lemurs included, and the island grows most of the world's vanilla. Ninety percent of Madagascar's wildlife lives nowhere else on earth, from a hundred kinds of lemur to the great baobabs of the western avenues, which is why biologists call it the eighth continent. The flag's white and red come from the old Merina kingdom, and the green honours the coastal peoples who farmed and fished around it.
